The bottom is a 2-inch thick memory foam pad. By the way, this pad doesn't seem to have a removable cover. The outer cover is easy to remove and wash, which is very convenient. All the stitching is inside, no loose threads. It didn't feel very thick when taken out of the vacuum packaging, but it's very fluffy when unfolded. There's no pungent chemical smell either. I love the design of being able to add foam crumbs whenever needed; we use it every day. I weigh 220 pounds (about 100 kilograms). Although I haven't tried falling from a height (like bouldering), I have tried falling directly onto it while standing, and it cushioned my impact very well.
